Danby and Castleton are two neighbouring villages high in the Esk Valley, about 12 miles west of Whitby as the crow flies and a longer drive by road through the dales or over the moors. We clear homes across this part of the valley, from village terraces to isolated farmhouses, and we plan each job so that a single trip covers everything.
A little about Danby & Castleton
Both villages sit in the upper Esk Valley in the heart of the North York Moors, each with a station on the Esk Valley line between Whitby and Middlesbrough. Danby is home to The Moors National Park Centre, and the ruins of Danby Castle stand on the valley side nearby, with Danby Beacon on the high moor to the north. Castleton lies a little to the west on a ridge above the river, with a row of stone houses along its main street. Around both villages, farms and cottages are scattered along the dales, many of them built of local sandstone with farm buildings attached.
What a moorland clearance involves
Clearing a house up here often means more than emptying rooms. We regularly deal with:
- Farmhouses with large kitchens, several bedrooms and deep cupboards
- Barns, stores and workshops containing tools, scrap, old feed bins and machinery parts
- Lofts in stone cottages with small hatches and steep ladders
- Gardens and yards that need clearing before a property can be marketed
We include every building you need emptied in the quote. Paints, oils, chemicals and gas bottles are handled separately so they go to the right place.
Getting there and getting in
Moorland roads are narrow in places, with steep banks, cattle grids and sheep on the road. Farm tracks can be rough, and some are not suitable for a large van in wet weather. Please send photos of the track or lane as well as the property. In winter we keep an eye on the forecast, and if snow or ice makes the roads unsafe we will contact you to rearrange rather than take chances.
Services that suit the upper Esk Valley
For farms and homes with outbuildings, our clearance of garages, barns and workshops sits alongside a full house clearance. Families settling an estate often need a clearance to fit the probate timetable, and for overgrown gardens and yards there is our garden clearance service.
Care with belongings
Farmhouses and long-held family homes can hold generations of paperwork, photographs and keepsakes. We work through each room methodically and set aside anything that looks personal or important, including deeds, letters, medals and family photos. You can go through them at your own pace.
After that, reuse and donation come first, then recycling, then proper disposal with paperwork. We keep waste transfer paperwork for every job, and you are always welcome to ask to see our waste carrier registration before we start.
If you live away, we can collect keys from a neighbour or your solicitor, and send you photos and updates as the clearance goes on.
